Looking for a creative new way to incorporate kratom into your self-care routine? Try making kratom soap! In recent years, DIY soapmaking has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity. Making your own soap is fun, relaxing, and great for homemade gifting. By adding kratom to your homemade soap, you can experience a new combination of self-care and wellness.
While research on kratom for skincare is limited, lathering up with a DIY bar of kratom soap offers many potential benefits. Depending on the strain of kratom used, this special soap can help you wake up, feel more focused, or unwind after a long day. The act of soapmaking itself can also be very relaxing.
So grab your favorite kratom powder, and let’s make some special soap:
Step 1. Gather Your Ingredients & Materials
The first step in making kratom soap is gathering your ingredients and tools. You don’t want to find yourself in the middle of soapmaking only to realize you’re missing a crucial element.
Soap Ingredients
While there are many different recipes for making DIY soap, we prefer to keep it simple with a base of lye and natural oils. You’ll blend this base with your favorite kratom powder plus essential oils for scent. (Note: Our ingredients list is measured in grams. - 70g lye
- 150g distilled water
- 200g olive oil
- 200g coconut oil
- 200g shea butter
- 5-10 drops pure essential oil
- Kratom powder (strain and dose based on your personal preference)
- Natural food coloring (optional)
For essential oil, we recommend a light, refreshing scent that evokes a sense of calm. Some of our favorites include lavender, peppermint, citrus oils, or sandalwood. You can also get creative and combine scents for a signature soap that’s all your own!
Soapmaking Tools
Next, make sure you have the proper tools for soapmaking. Although you may already have some of these items in your kitchen, we recommend purchasing or borrowing an extra set that’s reserved just for your DIY soap. This will avoid any potential cross-contamination with food items.
- Saucepans
- Heat-safe mixing containers (such as Pyrex glass)
- A stick blender
- Silicone molds
- A spatula
- Food thermometer
- Digital scale
- Parchment paper
Safety Gear
Finally, don’t forget to use proper safety gear. Soapmaking involves lye, hot oil, and other elements that may pose a risk of irritation, burns, or other safety issues. While it may seem like overkill, it’s always important to protect yourself from accidents.
- Goggles
- Latex or nitrile gloves
- Ventilator/face mask
- A long-sleeved shirt
A Note on Your Soapmaking Space
Homemade soap can be made in almost any location with a stove or hot plate. For most of us, the kitchen will be the best area for this DIY task. Just make sure that your soapmaking space is well-ventilated and “adults only.” Always keep your kratom and other soapmaking supplies out of reach of children and pets.
Step 2. Prepare the Soap Base
Once you have your materials and tools, it’s time to prepare the soap base. The base is the mixture of lye and oils that will eventually form the soap’s “body” and provide its luxuriant, soothing suds.
Pour the distilled water into one of the saucepans. Place it over medium heat and slowly add the lye, stirring continuously until the lye is fully dissolved. Once dissolved, set aside and let cool to 100 degrees F.
While the water and lye mixture cools, melt the olive oil, coconut oil, and shea butter together in another pan or heatproof container. Cool to 100 degrees F, then pour the lye solution into this mixture.
Use your stick blender to combine the melted oils and lye solution. Blend until the whole mixture thickens to a density where it leaves a “trace trail” when drizzled from the blender or spatula.
Now you’re ready for the third step in our kratom soapmaking journey!
Step 3. Add Kratom & Essential Oils
Next, add your kratom powder and essential oils to the warm, thickened soap base. Blend until the powder and oils are fully dissolved. During this stage, you can also add your optional food colorings.
Step 4. Pour Into Soap Molds
Before your soap liquid cools, carefully pour it into the silicone molds. Tap the sides of the mold to eliminate air bubbles. Use the spatula to wipe away any excess soap from the top or edges of the mold.
Then, cover the mold with parchment paper. To encourage faster setting, you can also wrap it in a towel.
Step 5. The Waiting Game
After pouring into the molds, place your kratom-infused soap in a cool, dry area and allow it to set. This usually takes between 24 and 48 hours. When the soap is ready, it will feel mostly solid and won’t wiggle or jiggle. If it’s still soft to the touch, it’s not ready yet.
Once set, remove the soap from the mold and let it cure for 4-6 weeks. This allows the soap to harden completely. It also neutralizes any remaining lye and ensures that the kratom is fully infused into the oil base.
Step 6. Enjoy!
After curing, your soap is ready to enjoy! If you’re giving it to kratom-loving friends, consider packaging it in a custom wrapper or gift bag. Otherwise, store your soap in plastic wrap or a cool, dry container.
Although researchers are still learning about the therapeutic potential of soap made with kratom, using your DIY soap offers a whole new way to experience its benefits. The kratom-infused soap recipe in this article is moisturizing and cleansing and will help you enjoy more soothing self-care.
