Myths & Facts: Clearing Up Common Misunderstandings About Kratom

Black magnifier on a yellow background.

Kratom is used by people all over the world. But like many natural plant products, there’s a lot of misinformation about kratom. Sometimes, it’s difficult to separate kratom myths from kratom facts. Clearing up common misconceptions about kratom will help you make better decisions about usage, dosing, and more.

Whether you’re a long-time kratom user or exploring kratom for the first time, it’s always important to educate yourself with accurate information. Don’t let myths about kratom influence the way you engage with this plant.

Let’s take a closer look at some common kratom myths and provide the facts to clear them up.

Myth: All Kratom is the Same

All kratom comes from the same source: the leaves of the Mitragyna speciosa tree. These leaves contain natural chemical compounds, known as alkaloids, which are the cause of kratom’s effects and benefits. The primary active ingredient alkaloids are called Mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine, respectively.

Because all kratom has these two alkaloids, some people mistakenly believe that every type of kratom offers the same experience. However, this is actually one of the many myths about kratom that isn’t accurate.

Fact: Different Strains Have Different Effects

The truth is that there are different varieties of kratom, also known as “strains,” which deliver different effects based on the age of the leaves. As the leaves age, they change color and the balance of the two alkaloids shifts.

The youngest leaves, which are harvested as white vein kratom, have a higher concentration of mitragynine and a lower amount of 7-hydroxymitragynine. This delivers a vibrant effect and results in a sense of motivation and sharper focus. The oldest leaves, also known as red vein kratom, have a higher balance of 7-hydroxymitragynine and therefore induce a more grounding, chill vibe that helps users wind down. Green vein kratom, which is “middle-aged,” provides a balance of both.

Myth: Kratom is an Illegal Drug

One of the most common kratom myths is that kratom is an illegal drug. Some people believe this myth because kratom is banned in certain states. Other regions impose certain restrictions on kratom. For example, many localities ban the sale and possession of kratom to anyone under 18.

In some places, it may also be prohibited to possess or use kratom, even if you’ve purchased it in a state that does not regulate kratom sales. To learn about the legal status of kratom where you live, visit the American Kratom Association’s Legality and Legislation Map.

Fact: Kratom is Not Federally Regulated

Although kratom is prohibited in some regions, it is not a federally controlled substance. The Drug Enforcement Agency had previously moved to classify kratom as a Schedule I drug, but this proposal was withdrawn in 2016 after public backlash.

Additionally, federal legislation such as the Kratom Consumer Protection Act is currently pending. The KCPA would prohibit agencies like the Food and Drug Administration and the DEA from imposing severe restrictions on kratom, while also establishing task forces for further study of kratom and its benefits.

Myth: Drug Tests Don’t Register Kratom

People who work in occupations that require drug testing may have heard that kratom won’t show up on a test. This is actually one of the few kratom myths that has some truth to it. Standard drug tests are designed to detect the chemical compounds of marijuana, cocaine, opioids, and other controlled substances — but they won’t detect the alkaloids present in kratom.

Fact: Some Tests Will Detect It

However, some drug tests do detect the alkaloids in kratom as well as other kratom byproducts. People who live or work in regions where kratom has been banned may encounter these tests. Always use kratom responsibly and in accordance with your local laws. Furthermore, it’s important to purchase your kratom from a legitimate, AKA GMP-certified vendor. This will ensure that your kratom is 100% pure and natural, without any additives that could potentially register on a drug test.

Myth: All Kratom Vendors Can Be Trusted

Speaking of kratom vendors, don’t assume that everyone selling kratom is trustworthy. Unfortunately, as with any industry, there are always bad apples who cut corners.

Some kratom vendors sell low-quality products, products that aren’t fresh, or “dilute” their kratom with fillers and additives. Purchasing poor-quality kratom means you’ll experience weaker effects, and fewer benefits, and the product may go stale before you’re able to use it all.

Fact: Some Vendors are Certified, Some Are Not

When choosing where to buy your kratom, research the seller and learn their story. Is their kratom tested for impurities by a third-party lab? Do they ethically source from small Fair Trade farms? Are they certified by the American Kratom Association?

When you choose a vendor like Joe’s Botanicals, we guarantee you’ll receive premium quality kratom that’s always fresh, potent, and 100% natural. Shop now.
